Former Arsenal midfielder explains why Spurs will reach the Champions League final

Tottenham emerged victorious on away goals in the quarter finals against Manchester City after two highly intense and close encounters.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have had an unbelievable ride in this year’s competition after coming precariously close to being knocked out after the first three group games.

Spurs have now set up a semi final clash against Eredivisie leadera Ajax, who have been the surprise package of this year’s tournament.

Ajax have sent both Real Madrid and Juventus out of the tournament in the round of 16 and quarter final respectively, and have impressed everybody with their style of fearless football.

Erik Ten Hag’s young side are now attempting to do the impossible and win the trophy but former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Tottenham will end their journey.

Merson backed Spurs to create history and book a place in the Champions League final in Madrid. The 51-year-old said Pochettino’s side will avoid the mistakes that Juventus and Real Madrid made by underestimating Ajax.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ The Debate, Merson said, “Don’t take anything away from Tottenham, this is a phenomenal football result. They have every chance of being in the final.

“Ajax are good but if Tottenham play like they can and to their best ability they will be too strong for Ajax.

“They (Ajax) play without fear but this is the Champions League semi-final now. This is not your league games or going to Juventus where you’ve got nothing to lose or to Real Madrid where you’ve got nothing to lose.

“The other teams took liberties with them but Tottenham won’t do that. Tottenham will give them respect and they’ll give Tottenham respect.”
