Former Arsenal star claims Tottenham are now in the Premier League title race

Former Arsenal and Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre believes that as many as five teams could win the Premier League title this season, including Tottenham Hotspur.

Going into the weekend, some Spurs fans on Twitter were convinced that the Lilywhites could challenge for the league this year.

That faith only seemed to be reinforced on the back of a scintillating first-half display by Jose Mourinho’s men, in which Harry Kane and Heung-min Son ran riot.

The Special One has an impressive record in his second season at clubs and will be hoping to end Tottenham’s 12 year wait for a trophy this season.

While Liverpool ran away with the title last time out, the unpredictability of the Premier League results so far and the long-term injury to Virgil Van Dijk could throw things wide open.

Silvestre believes that it could turn out to be an exciting and wide-open race this season.

Speaking to 888Sport (as relayed by Football.London), the former Arsenal defender said: “It is too early to see who will be there at the end in the title race.

“But it will be a stronger top six because clubs who have had a bad year don’t tend to have a second bad year.

“It is exciting to see we will have Arsenal and Spurs and (Manchester) City and Liverpool involved in the race. Everton also.

“It is very good for the fans to see these big clubs with so much quality fighting.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As some have suggested, this season could turn out to be one of the most open since Leicester won it in 2015-16. While the wounds are still understandably raw since Sunday’s result for many Spurs fans, I genuinely think we have a shot at going all the way. If we can sort our defensive frailties when it comes to set pieces, I genuinely think our defensive shape and organisation is better than many of our rivals’.
