Former director reveals he told Spurs to sign Real Madrid star eight years ago

Former Tottenham technical director Ramon Planes has admitted that he wanted the club to sign Marco Asensio before he joined Real Madrid.

Asensio joined Los Blancos as an 18-year-old from Real Mallorca in December 2014 for a fee of just £3.5 million (ESPN).

The Spanish international midfielder has since gone on to forge a successful career in Madrid, making well over 200 appearances en route to winning two Champions League crowns and two La Liga titles (Transfermarkt).

But the 26-year-old could have seen his career pan out differently almost eight years ago, had Planes managed to convince Tottenham to push for his signature

Planes spent time at Spurs as the club’s technical secretary during the 2014-15 campaign and urged them to push to sign Asensio from Mallorca.

However, a move never materialised with Spurs failing to act quick enough to enter negotiations, before allowing Madrid to swoop in.

He told Radio Marca via Mundo Deportivo: “I watched a Zaragoza-Mallorca game and was amazed by a player called Marco Asensio.

“And in the same car park at La Romareda, I called my superiors at Tottenham to tell them that he had to be signed.

“In view of the experience, I wanted to speed up the signing of Pedri so that the same thing didn’t happen to me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We will never know exactly how Asensio’s career would have panned out had he signed with Spurs those years ago, but it could have been a big coup seeing how he has developed today. We will also not exactly know why Spurs didn’t push to secure the signing either, so we just need to suck this one up.
