Former Liverpool man asks rumoured Spurs target to stay and fight for his place

Former Liverpool defender, Martin Skrtel has asked his compatriot Milan Skriniar to stay at Inter Milan and fight for his place amidst rumours of a potential switch to Tottenham in January.

It was reported that Skriniar was Jose Mourinho’s first-choice defensive target during the previous transfer window.

The deal looked as though it may go through in the final days of the window, with Tottenham’s technical performance director Steve Hitchen even being spotted in Italy with Skriniar’s agent (Gianluca Di Marzio).

However, the North Londoners were not able to agree on a deal with Inter before the transfer deadline and snapped up Swansea City’s Joe Rodon instead.

Skrtel has urged his compatriot to snub interest from Spurs, as well as his former club, and win his place back in Antonio Conte’s starting eleven.

He told Sport Aktuality (as relayed by Liverpool Echo): “There are moments in the life of every player where things go really well, but there are also moments where things don’t go as planned.

“When this happens it is important for a player to react. Skriniar is going through something similar to this at Inter.

“In recent games, he has lost his role as a starter and there is more and more talk about the fact that he could leave the club. (But) he is still young and he should remain strong and fight for his recovery.

“Although there is the interest of English and Spanish clubs, the best solution for him would be to stay at Inter, where he has built a great name for himself.”
