Former Middlesbrough boss claims West Ham target is better than Djed Spence

Neil Warnock has claimed that Middlesbrough right-back Isaiah Jones is a better player than Djed Spence, who is reportedly on his way to Tottenham Hotspur.

It looks only a matter of time before Spurs officially announce their capture of Spence, with reports indicating that the right-back has already completed his medical ahead of completing a switch to north London (Daily Mail).

The 21-year-old shot to the limelight during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season, playing a key role in helping the club win promotion back to the top flight.

Warnock was in charge of Boro when the club decided to loan Spence out to Forest since the Teessiders had another promising young right-back in Jones, who also had an impressive 2021/22 campaign while also suggesting there has been question marks over the player’s attitude.

Reports indicate that West Ham United are keeping tabs on the 23-year-old this summer (The Athletic).

Warnock has now spoken about Boro’s decision to loan Spence out and opined that Jones was the best wing-back in the Championship last season.

He told SPORTbible, he said: “In the best interests of the club, he had to go out on loan. I felt if he went out on loan and did well, they’d get money for him. Whereas Isaiah Jones, I don’t think there’s a better right wing-back in the league, he’s the best one there is.”

There is a reason why Spence is being sought after by several top-flight clubs across Europe while Jones looks set to stay in the Championship.

That clearly suggests that many clubs disagree with Warnock’s suggestion of the latter being a better player.

Spence appears to be more physically and technically gifted than his Boro teammate while also being two years younger.
