Former midfielder believes Spurs can challenge for the Premier League title

Ryan Mason believes that Tottenham Hotspur should be considered as contenders for the Premier League title this season.

Tottenham’s 2-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday evening lifted them back into third place in the table above Chelsea and Arsenal who both won their respective matches on the weekend.

Manchester City’s failure to win at Stamford Bridge means that Tottenham are now six points behind unbeaten Liverpool who occupy top spot.

Tottenham’s tally of 36 points from 16 games is their best ever start to a Premier League season. Only twice before have they had a better total after 16 matches in a top-flight campaign (46 in 1960-61 and 37 in 1956-57.)

Mason who came through the ranks at Tottenham and went on to make over 50 appearances for the club insists that his former side are capable of mounting a challenge for the top honour.

The midfielder now works as a football pundit following his premature retirement from football after sustaining a fractured skull while playing for Hull City at Chelsea in January of last year.

Mason said on talkSPORT’s The Final Word: “I’ve said it all season and I really believe it.

“They’ve got a manager that’s been there for his fifth season now. They’ve got a squad of players who know each other inside out.

“They’ve challenged a couple of times but failed unfortunately.

“For me, it’s probably suiting them that all the talk is about Liverpool and Manchester City because quietly they’re going about their business, they’re winning games and they’re within touching distance.

“When we come out of this Christmas period in January we’ll probably have an idea of who the top two are or someone may have run away with it.

“The next six or seven games are crucial to see how the season will pan out.”
