Former PL manager claims Spurs may sell 28-year-old in the summer

Alex McLeish has claimed that the Tottenham Hotspur squad is in need of a reboot in the summer transfer window and added that Erik Lamela is one of the players that Jose Mourinho could look to replace at the end of the season.

Spurs made seven new signings in last summer’s transfer window and there was a lot made about the strength in depth that the North Londoners had within their ranks.

However, Mourinho’s men have really struggled to get results over the past couple of months and the quality of the squad has subsequently been questioned.

Lamela has been one of the few bright-sparks for Spurs over the last few weeks, with Mourinho admitting last week that he loves the Argentine’s intensity.

While McLeish admitted that the 28-year-old is capable of producing moments of quality, he insisted that the midfielder lacks the consistency needed to get Tottenham to where they want to be.

Speaking about the Tottenham squad, the former Birmingham City boss told Football Insider: “You’re looking at some of the players and saying: ‘They need to buy new players, they need to reboot.’

“That seems to happen to Spurs every few years when just when you think they’ve turned the corner and the hunt of a trophy.

“I just don’t think they’ve got a real rhythm again, when Harry Kane was out the team we saw that Son was trying to do everything, trying to do Harry’s job. You saw he was a wee bit lost, then he came back in and there was a wee bit of such resurgence.

“If they lose those two, the Spurs fans would feel they were doomed, you know?”

When asked if there was anyone in particular that the North Londoners need to replace, the 62-year-old responded: “I do believe guys like Erik Lamela, he was one of the guys that came in when Bale left, he hasn’t really hit the heights that sometimes we see him at.

“We spoke after the 5-4 thriller (v Everton) and Erik Lamela scored a couple of goals in that, he looked exciting and somebody with a magic left foot that’s almost like a wand at times, but it’s only really in little bits of the season.

“Then there’s a wee run of maybe two or three games and that kind of player is a bit of a maverick and does great things at times but then when you’re looking for consistency, that’s the difference.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite strange of McLeish to single Lamela out as a player who should be sold since the Argentine has been our best player for the last few weeks. I believe Mourinho will be thinking about replacing the likes of Sanchez, Winks and Lucas before Lamela.
