Former PL manager tips Spurs to demand £25m to sanction sale of winger

Alex McLeish has claimed Tottenham will look to demand at least £25million to sanction the sale of Steven Bergwijn this month.

The 24-year-old has struggled to make an impact this term – namely under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, which has plunged his future in North London into doubt.

As such, Conte is reportedly willing to part ways with Bergwijn along with the likes of Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Matt Doherty as part of the club’s proposed overhaul.

Spurs have received interest in the Dutch international’s services from Ajax, with reports suggesting an €18 million (£15m) bid has already been tabled.

However, the offer has since been rejected by Spurs, who are said to be holding out for a higher fee to finalise the transfer.

McLeish believes Spurs could use this opportunity to make back the £25million they spent on Bergwijn in January 2020 and even make a potential profit if negotiations go in their favour.

He told Football Insider: “[Daniel] Levy will definitely want his money back. Maybe even make a little bit of profit. But who’s out there?

“That will very much depend on if there’s a buyer. Is there someone who will go to Spurs’ level in terms of their demands?”

Bergwijn’s proposed move to Ajax does seem likely to happen, but the question is just how much it will be for. The first offer was way down on what Spurs originally bought him for and we don’t know how high Ajax would be willing to go to get the move done.
