Former PL referee explains whether Lloris deserved free-kick against Wilson

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has said that Jarred Gillett was right not to blow for a foul after the coming together between Hugo Lloris and Callum Wilson on Sunday.

Lloris came out of his area to deal with a ball over the top and the goalkeeper seemed to be clattered into by Wilson after knocking the ball past the Newcastle striker, who subsequently lifted the ball into an empty net to give the away side the lead.

Gallagher has now claimed that Wilson did not do anything wrong as the 30-year-old could not have gone anywhere else.

When questioned by former Spurs number one Paul Robinson about the Newcastle star putting his arm out to impede Lloris, Gallagher insisted that there was not enough evidence for the VAR to overturn the referee’s decision.

Watch what the 65-year-old told Sky Sports Football Daily about the incident:

I do think the mistake can be deemed clear and obvious and that VAR should have asked the referee to re-watch the incident. Having said that, it was still a lapse in concentration from Lloris, who should have cleared the ball with his first touch.
