Former Premier League goalkeeper explains why Vicario is better than Raya and Ramsdale

Paul Robinson believes that Tottenham number one Guglielmo Vicario is a cut above Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya.

It is fair to say that not all Spurs fans were completely convinced by the club’s signing of Vicario last summer, with many viewing him as the Lilywhites simply taking the cheaper option to David Raya.

However, the Italian has been exceptional right from day one and has not only showcased his excellent shot-stopping skills but also his proficiency in playing out from the back, which is crucial given the way Ange Postecoglou want his side to play.

The 27-year-old has also emerged as one of the leaders of the Tottenham dressing room and all signs are that he could be a fantastic servant for the club for many years to come.

Is Vicario the goalkeeper of the season?

Robinson has certainly been impressed with the Italy international, insisting that he is not only the best goalkeeper in North London at the moment but also across the entire Premier League.

The former Spurs shot-stopper told Betfred: “Vicario had a brilliant start to the season and after Manchester City targeted his supposed weakness from crosses in their FA Cup clash, and Everton did the same a week later, but from then, he’s worked on his game and at one point he was probably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.

“Out of Vicario, Raya and Ramsdale, I’d take Vicario because sometimes we forget what a goalkeeper’s there to do and that’s keep the ball out of their net and when it comes to dominating their box and shot-stopping, Vicario’s the better out of the three.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even though many were disappointed last summer when Spurs went for Vicario over Raya, I doubt you would find a single Tottenham fan who is now willing to swap the Italian for the Arsenal man at the moment.
