Former Rangers striker claims Antonio Conte could still become Man Utd manager

Ally McCoist has claimed that Manchester United could appoint Antonio Conte as their next manager, particularly given the speculation linking Mauricio Pochettino with a return to Tottenham.

Football Insider revealed last week that Pochettino would jump at the chance to return to Tottenham in the summer if Antonio Conte walks away from the club.

The report claimed that the 50-year-old retains ‘great affection’ for the Lilywhites and has remained in contact with Daniel Levy since leaving Spurs in 2019.

Meanwhile, the Paris Saint-Germain boss has also been heavily linked with the United hot seat over recent months (Daily Mail), although Erik Ten Hag now appears to be the favourite to take over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick (Sky Sports).

McCoist believes that Conte could still jump ship from Tottenham to United if the Red Devils came calling, insisting that the Italian could get the financial backing he needs at Old Trafford to build a really strong team.

The former Rangers boss told FourFourTwo: “I think United missed the boat by not appointing Conte at the end of last year, and in normal circumstances, you would think that ship had sailed, however, nothing surprises you in football.

“You hear the rumours that Mauricio Pochettino wants to go back to Spurs, and doesn’t fancy United, so I wouldn’t rule out Conte going to United.”

“The one thing Conte wants is financial backing, and I am not sure he is happy with what he is getting at Spurs. He has done a few strange interviews and made a few comments that would indicate that is the case.

“United have great players, but they are not a great team, and I think Conte could help mould them into that. It is a time for real change.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Conte has mellowed down a lot more in his interviews over the last few weeks and he now appears committed to the long-term project at Spurs. I fully expect the Italian to be backed in the summer transfer window. So, I do not think there is much chance of him walking away this summer.
