Former Spur explains why Christian Eriksen has struggled for form this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alan Hutton believes that Christian Eriksen has had his head turned which has caused his form to dip.

The Dane revealed just days after Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the final of the Champions League that he wanted to seek a challenge away from North London whilst admitting that he would welcome interest from Real Madrid (Ekstra Bladet).

Eriksen has found himself in and out of the Spurs team in the opening weeks of the season and after impressing when he came on as a replacement in the opening day win against Aston Villa, has struggled to show consistency.

Hutton described the 27-year-old’s performance against Olympiacos last week as the worst game he has played for the club.

The former Ajax player is out of contract at Tottenham next summer and will be able to hold discussions with European clubs in January over a pre-contract agreement which would see him walk away as a free agent.

“Eriksen has had a lot of up and down performances, and midweek was by far his worst game,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“I do believe with all the transfer rumours and stuff, he has had his head turned so he has had a dip in form, he has also been in and out of the side which doesn’t help.

“So I think after midweek, having a poor game, Pochettino decided to mix things up and I know he likes to rotate the squad as well so that was probably part of it.

“Like I said he hasn’t played millions of games, all the games, so after having a poor game, he (Pochettino) probably just decided to switch things up, one, to give him a rest and, two, to give someone else a shot.”
