Former Spur handed Montreal Impact MLS is Back best player award

Former Spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama has been handed the award of Montreal Impact’s best player in the MLS is Back tournament (Goal).

Despite the Canadian side being eliminated in the preliminary knockout stage of the tournament, the Kenyan’s impressive performances did not go unnoticed.

Wanyama started in all of the Group C games for Montreal which saw the Canadian side progress to the knockout stages before being eliminated following a 1-0 defeat to Orlando City (MLS).

The 29-year-old midfielder was awarded the Man of the Match award in Montreal’s narrow 1-0 victory over DC United in July (MLS).

Spurs allowed Wanyama to leave N17 in March to the MLS side on a free transfer with the Kenyan starting in all four of the matches following the resumption of the campaign following the coronavirus pandemic (transfermarkt).

Ironically, it is Wanyama’s position in which Spurs have suffered this season. The Kenyan made two appearances for Spurs this season off the bench and yet Tottenham continued to struggle in the defensive side of midfield. It is rumoured Spurs will finally address the problem this summer with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg potentially joining but it does seem odd Wanyama was not given more of a chance this season.
