Former Spur has theory why Alderweireld and Trippier were left at home

Tottenham sank to a third straight defeat last night, losing 2-1 to Inter Milan in the Champions League at the San Siro.

Spurs led through Christian Eriksen in the 53rd minute, but conceded two goals in the final seven minutes to drop all three points in their group stage opener.

Despite this, there were positives to take, as Spurs looked far closer to their usual selves than in the games against Liverpool and Watford.

Pochettino decided to leave first team stars Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier at home, opting for the fresh Davinson Sanchez and Serge Aurier in their place.

Both of these players had decent games, and Poch called for more respect from the media after they questioned why they were played ahead of Toby and Tripps.

Former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy thinks he knows why Poch dropped the duo: “I wonder if he was leaving out players who looked tired. But if he came out and said that the first thing people would have said is ‘what about Harry Kane, he needs a rest?’

“But they’re not in a position to rest Harry Kane. (If Pochettino said Trippier and Alderweireld needed to be rested) then people would have said Kane is the one he should be giving a rest, too.”

Was Poch right to drop Alderweireld and Trippier? Have your say!
