Former Spur reveals where he thinks Alderweireld will be playing next season

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur continues to be a much-discussed subject in the media.

The Belgian defender is available for just £25 million this summer due to the transfer release clause in his contract and was somewhat surprisingly linked with a move to Arsenal (Daily Express).

Alderweireld has been at Tottenham since joining from Atlético Madrid in 2015 for a fee of £11.4m (Guardian) and has gone on to become a mainstay in the heart of the defence alongside his compatriot Jan Vertonghen.

Former Spurs defender Pascal Chimbonda believes that Alderweireld will only be tempted to depart if one of European football’s elite come in for him.

Alderweireld is said to earn £80,000 a week at Tottenham (spotrac) which is a considerable less than the £200,000 which Harry Kane pockets each week as the club’s highest earner (The Sun).

Chimbonda feels that money is not the key driver for Alderweireld and he will remain at Spurs next season which will eradicate the need to recruit any centre-halves in the current transfer window.

He told Sportingbet: “Alderweireld will only leave Tottenham for one of Europe’s elite clubs. There seems to be a wage issue between him and the club, but as a player you also want to be playing at the highest level and I can’t see him taking a step backwards to earn more.

“Some players are happy to take a step back for a higher wage package but Alderweireld doesn’t seem to be a player with that mentality. I’m confident that he will be playing in a Tottenham shirt next season and he will feel confident that Tottenham can deliver a trophy.

“If Tottenham can keep hold of Alderweireld, then they won’t have to sign any defenders this summer transfer window.”
