Former Spurs boss and Arsenal legend disagree on disallowed Everton penalty

Tim Sherwood and Ian Wright disagreed over whether or not Chris Kavanagh was right to reverse the penalty he handed to Everton in the second half against Tottenham yesterday.

Even though Antonio Conte’s first Premier League game in charge of Spurs finished goalless, the encounter was certainly eventful, with a penalty being overturned and a red card being brandished in the second half.

As one would expect, the disallowed spot-kick has been one of the main talking points after the match, with Rafael Benitez insisting that it should have stood and Conte suggesting the referee made the right call to reverse it.

The incident took place in the 63rd minute when Richarlison went down after a challenge by Hugo Lloris and Kavanagh pointed to the spot.

However, following the intervention from the VAR, Kavanagh overturned his decision after watching it back on the touchline monitor.

Wright sighted Richarlison getting back to his feet immediately after the challenge as evidence that it was not a penalty.

The former Arsenal forward told Premier League Productions: “Richarlison looks like he is ready to go down now anyway.

“He has kind of like taken him out, he has impeded him a little bit, but he does get up.

“The thing with it is that Richarlison has got up and is ready to play on.”

However, Sherwood claimed that Lloris had clearly impeded the Everton forward despite getting a touch on the ball.

The former Spurs midfielder said: “Now, Hugo might have got a slight touch on it, but then his follow-through definitely brings down Richarlison.

“His body and his right arms sweeps Richarlison down.”

I can see where Sherwood is coming from and he would have a fair point if the ball had not changed direction despite Hugo’s touch.

However, Hugo’s touch clearly changed the direction of the ball and so Richarlison could not have run on to it without turning even if he had not been impeded by Spurs goalkeeper.

I do believe that the referee had no choice but to reverse his decision once he saw the incident on the touchline monitor.
