Former Spurs boss says Conte won’t be happy despite win against Leicester

Tottenham Hotspur may have just thrashed Leicester City 6-2 in their Premier League tie at the weekend, but former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood insists Antonio Conte won’t be happy with the performance of his team.

After suffering their first defeat of the season in midweek against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, Spurs needed to bounce back against Leicester. They did just that, with a big win to maintain the unbeaten start to the domestic campaign.

First-half goals from Harry Kane and Eric Dier, a first Spurs goal for Rodrigo Bentancur, and a Heung-min Son hat-trick sealed the 6-2 victory for the North London club. Spurs now go into the international break on a high, sitting in third place in the league table.

Despite the impressive scoreline, there were plenty of areas of concern for those watching. Sloppy defending and poor use of possession, particularly in the first half, prove Spurs have lots of work still to do to get to their best.

Sherwood, speaking to Premier League Productions (17/09/22 at 7:25 pm), insists Conte will not have been pleased with what he saw, regardless of getting the win and scoring six goals.

He said: “I will tell you now, Antonio Conte isn’t happy with that performance. It was too open for an Antonio Conte side.

“It was too chaotic. But it suited Tottenham. They had far too much quality. If you are going to get open against Tottenham, then you are going to get punished.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While there were many positives to take away from the Leicester game, we can’t let the scoreline mask the fact that Spurs were far from their best for much of the first half. The team is looking good, but it’s still taking far too long to get into gear each game.

Defensive errors and misplaced passing need to be resolved quickly, and you’d hope to see Spurs assert more dominance on these kinds of games from the start.
