Former Spurs star DeAndre Yedlin has revealed that Nabil Bentaleb was one of the best players at Tottenham during his time at the club.
Yedlin played alongside Bentaleb for a couple of years at Spurs before being sold to Newcastle in the summer of 2016.
Bentaleb, who is just a few months older than Yedlin, made his debut for the club under Tim Sherwood in December 2013 and went on to be a regular in the side for the next year and a half.
However, he eventually lost his place in the side and, like Yedlin, left the club after the end of the 2015-16 season, linking up with Schalke.
After the midfielder returned to England last month by joining the Magpies on loan for the remainder of the season, Yedlin was asked his thoughts on the Algerian as well as Danny Rose, who also joined Steve Bruce’s side on loan.
When asked about the new additions, Yedlin told Newcastle United’s official website: “I just feel they’ll bring more experience. You can never have enough experience.
“Danny (Rose) – we all know what he can do. Nabil (Bentaleb) was one of the best players at Tottenham when I was there and he’s had his time at Schalke.”
This is a rather surprising statement, as the Tottenham squad back then included the likes of Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen, a young Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen, and Harry Kane, to name just a few.
Spurs Web Opinion
I think Yedlin is just trying to be kind to Bentaleb here. However, the Algerian was very highly rated at the club and it looked at one point like he was certain to have a long career in North London. However, it was problems with the midfielder’s attitude that likely bought an end to his time at the club. It is anybody’s guess how things might have turned out had Bentaleb got his head down and focussed on winning his place in the side back.
