Former Spurs man claims club ‘have better players’ than top four contenders

Danny Murphy has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s squad is at least as good as Leicester City’s if not better and insisted that Jose Mourinho is not getting the best of the stars at his disposal.

It was only a little over two months ago that Spurs were being considered potential title contenders.

However, since the 2-0 loss at home to Leicester City in December, Tottenham’s form has fallen off a cliff, with a top-four finish now looking extremely difficult.

The Foxes, meanwhile, have gone from strength to strength since their win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Brendon Rodgers’ side now sitting third in the league table, level on points with Manchester United.

Murphy insisted that Spurs should be competing with the likes of Leicester, given the squad of players they have.

He questioned Mourinho’s team selections, insisting that the likes of Harry Winks and Toby Alderweireld should be playing more often than they have in recent weeks.

The former Spurs midfielder told talkSPORT: “When you look at Leicester’s squad and Tottenham’s squad, there’s not too much difference.

“If anything, you would argue that Tottenham have better players, especially in attacking areas.

“Would Son get in Leicester’s team? I think so. We’re looking at two teams who are pretty level in terms of squads.

“I think another coach could get more out of Tottenham and get them in a similar position to Leicester.

“Most football fans are realistic, there was a bit of talk earlier in the season about Tottenham winning the title, but that was never going to happen.

“When you look at the squad, Christian Eriksen left and maybe they could’ve done more to keep him.

“He’s one they’ve missed. Rose has hardly got a game, he’s a high-quality international left-back. Alderweireld is the best centre-back they’ve got and he doesn’t play.

“Winks, Sissoko and Alli all played in the Champions League final, none of them are getting any game time.

“That’s where the questions rise: is he getting enough out of his players? The answer is no.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no question that we have more firepower up front than Leicester do but the Foxes do have a much better backline. While the midfield pairing in Tielemens and Ndidi is a formidable one, one could argue that Hojbjerg and Ndombele are just as good if not better. So we certainly should not be as far off from Leicester as we find ourselves.
