Report: Former Spurs man leading candidate to take over as Man Utd sporting director

Journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that Tottenham’s former head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is now the leading candidate to take over as Manchester United’s new sporting director.

Mitchell joined Tottenham as a head of scouting from Southampton, following Mauricio Pochettino from St. Mary’s to the North London club, before becoming the club’s head of recruitment.

The 42-year-old left Spurs back in 2018 to join the Red Bull Group and he has been serving as Monaco’s sporting director for the last three years.

There were some suggestions during the summer that Spurs could look to reappoint Mitchell as Fabio Paratici’s replacement (GiveMeSport) but that did not come to fruition, with the Lilywhites eventually bringing Johan Lange through the door.

Could Paul Mitchell make PL return with Man Utd?

Jones has now taken to social media to reveal that with INEOS Group set to buy a minority stake in Man Utd, Mitchell has become the favourite to become the Red Devils’ next sporting director.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Paul Mitchell had some big hits during his time at Tottenham (notable Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld), he also had some big misses, which has also been the case for the Englishman at Monaco. So, I am not convinced that his reputation as a genius talent spotter is completely warranted.
