Former Spurs manager warns club to not repeat mistakes they made with him

Harry Redknapp has warned the Tottenham hierarchy not to repeat the mistakes they made during his and Mauricio Pochettio’s time at the club, calling on them to give Ange Postecoglou the player he wants.

Spurs were quite busy during the summer transfer window and some reports over the last few weeks have indicated that the Lilywhites are once again expected to be one of the busiest Premier League clubs next month, with three new faces expected to arrive through the door in January (TEAMtalk).

Despite the poor run of form that Spurs had during November, they find themselves just seven points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Redknapp urges Tottenham to back Postecoglou

Redknapp believes that Postecoglou needs a lot of money to spend if Tottenham are to stand any chance of challenging at the top end of the Premier League.

The former Spurs manager recalled his own time at the club where they failed to strengthen appropriately in January of 2012 when the North London club were looking set for an unlikely title tilt, only to end up finishing in fourth place.

Redknapp told ESPN:”I think if we had bought those couple of players that year, we could have been very close to winning the league with that group. Pochettino obviously felt something like that after me. People criticise Daniel but the stadium is amazing, the training ground is top drawer.

“They’re building the team now and with everything else in place, hopefully, they will be up there challenging every season. But if they want to up there pushing for the top spots like Arsenal is now, they’ve got to move on a little bit, they’ve got to have a bit of a gamble. I can see a similarity with my time for sure.”

Redknapp also reminisced about the attractive style of football that his Tottenham team played, insisting that it was quite similar to the current side’s approach.

He added: “We played fantastic football. We were an exciting team to watch. We played with two wingers home and away, Bale and [Aaron] Lennon, a very attacking team who would have a go wherever we went.

“And that great European run, it was enjoyable. We played some great stuff, the nights at White Hart Lane, the crowds were amazing. We let teams know this was our ground and we’d go at them from the first whistle. We didn’t feel our way into any games, those European games especially.

“Ange has them playing a bit like that. I stuck his name up when they were not going to get Poch back, I said I’d go for Ange at Celtic. I like him. I don’t think it’s anything that clever, he just talks common sense. He understands the game, gets his point over, puts the team together and is doing a great job.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The football Tottenham played during the 2011-12 season was mesmerising to watch, with a midfield trio of Parker, Modric and Van der Vaart dominating teams, while Lennon and Bale on the flanks struck fear into the opposition. However, there is no doubt that the current Spurs side under Postecoglou gives that side a run for their money.
