Former Spurs player claims Pochettino is not an ‘elite’ manager

Darren Bent has said that he does not consider Mauricio Pochettino to be an elite manager, amidst the speculation linking the Argentine with a return to Tottenham.

According to several reliable sources (including Football.London’s Alasdair Gold), Pochettino remains Tottenham’s number one target but the North London club are still some way off being able to seal a deal for the Argentine.

Despite the fact that the former Spurs boss failed to deliver the Ligue 1 title to Paris Saint-Germain, the French giants are said to be determined to hold on to him.

Guillem Balague has revealed that the 49-year-old would have to publicly express his desire to leave Pairs if he is to engineer a move away from the club this summer, amidst interest from both Spurs and Real Madrid.

Bent is not convinced that Pocehttino belongs in the elite bracket of managers, pointing out that the Argentine’s record does not compare favourably to the likes of Thomas Tuchel.

The former Spurs striker told talkSPORT (7:27pm, May 30, 2021): “This is my issue because, and I have this argument all the time about Pochettino and people say he is an elite manager and I say that he is not.

“Well, you look at the time that he has been at PSG, he has had more than enough time to win the French league, you have to say with the squad that he has got.

“You look at the impact Thomas Tuchel has had at Chelsea since Frank Lampard got the sack and obviously he came in.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do believe Pochettino belongs in the elite group of managers. It is unfair to judge him too harshly on his failure to deliver the Ligue 1 title given the fact that he took over from Tuchel midway into the season when PSG were third in the table.

While Tuchel has done really well since arriving at Chelsea, let’s not forget that Pochettino took Spurs to a Champions League final with a far less expensive squad. Who knows how different history might have been if Liverpool had not been handed an early penalty.
