Former Spurs winger hints he is close to joining PL club – Rules out Lilywhites

Former Tottenham winger, Andros Townsend has hinted that he is close to signing for an unnamed Premier League club after his Crystal Palace contract ran out.

Townsend came through the ranks at Spurs and made a fantastic impression when he was handed regular opportunities in the first-ream by Andreas Villas-Boas.

However, a combination of injuries and poor form meant that the winger struggled to get game time under Mauricio Pochettino and he left his boyhood club under unfortunate circumstances after a physical altercation with then fitness coach, Nathan Gardiner.

Townsend, who has since admitted that he regrets the way things ended for him at Tottenham, has been a consistent performer for Palace over the years but he is now a free agent after the Eagles decided not to renew his contract.

Some Spurs fans on social media have even floated the idea that the Lilywhites should sign up the 30-year-old.

However, in a funny Q&A with talkSPORT’s Laura Woods and Tony Cascarino, Townsend has now revealed that he is close to agreeing a contract with a club that he has not played for before.

Here is the full transcript of the Q&A as published by talkSPORT:

Laura Woods: “Will you be in the Premier League next season?”

Townsend: “I don’t know [laughs]”

LW: “It’s a yes or no answer.”

AT: “What do you want me to say? [laughs]”

LW: “Okay, that’s fine, if you genuinely don’t know you can pass on that one. Will you be playing at a club north of the Watford Gap?”

AT: “If it’s Premier League, probably.”

Tony Cascarino: “Probably is a yes, right?”

LW: “Will your next manager be British?”

AT: “Not looking likely.”

LW: “Okay, that’s a no. Have you ever played for the club before?”

AT: “Out of the options currently, no.”

“LW: “Will you be playing in a red shirt?”

TC: “[Laughs] all different kits.”

AT: “Out of the options, no.”

LW: “Will you have to move away from your home to play for this club?”

AT: “Possibly.”

LW: “Is that a yes?”

AT: “It’s a yes, yeah.”

LW: “You folded really quickly there.

“I suppose the things that I have got from that are… not a lot to be honest because I didn’t write anything down [laughs]. When are you next coming on [talkSPORT]?”

AT: “Hopefully, if nothing is sorted, next week.”

LW: “Excellent. When are you hoping to have this wrapped up?”

AT: “Within the next week, I’d imagine.”

LW: “So when you next come on, we could know?”

AT: “We could know, yeah.”

LW: “Will you give us the exclusive?”

AT: “I will. I will indeed. I will give you 24 hours notice.

LW: Will you break it yourself?

AT: “Listen, the last person who did that was LeBron James and I don’t think I’ve got that stature!

“So I’m training somewhere this week. I’ve been given a final offer by a club with a deadline of ‘take it or leave it’ by the end of the week.

“So I’m pretty close now. Hopefully in the next week or so I’ll be signed and training somewhere full-time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs fans who seriously wanted Townsend back are speaking from their hearts rather than using their heads.

The former Tottenham man is clearly on the decline and we have seen nothing from him recently to suggest that he would even be an okay squad player for us.

However, perhaps the winger still has a year or two of Premier League football left in him. So, I’m delight to hear that he is close to getting a contract at a new club.
