Four Ajax fans plead guilty after throwing concrete slabs at police and Spurs fans

While Ajax’s brilliant display in their first leg win against Spurs has dominated headlines, there have been multiple unsavory incidents that have taken place off the pitch.

A few days ago, a video emerged that showed both sets of fans clashing violently, with glass bottles being thrown in the North London streets, as a result of which three police officers were injured (The Sun).

Metropolitan Police officials confirmed that they made a total of eight arrests after that incident.

Now, according to a report in The Independent, four Ajax fans have pleaded guilty to affray after throwing slabs of pavement at police and Tottenham Hotspur supporters, ahead of the match on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at 19:15, when travelling supporters started throwing pieces of concrete on Brereton Road, and three police officers who tried to intervene were assaulted but their injuries are not reported to be serious.

The four fans involved are now awaiting their sentence date.

While it is clearly just a minority of idiots who get involved in altercations like these, it is still disappointing to see these incidents particularly given the special connection between Ajax and Spurs.

Irrespective of the result in the second leg, let’s hope both fans are well behaved on the night.
