Free agent backs Tottenham to recover and do ‘much better’ next season

Lucas Moura admits that everyone at Tottenham has been disappointed by the campaign they had this season, but insisted that the squad has enough quality to bounce back next year.

Lucas Moura had a fairytale ending to his time in North London, scoring a brilliant solo goal in his last piece of action in a Tottenham shirt as the Lilywhites emerged 4-1 winners from Elland Road on Sunday.

The goal was reminiscent of many moments of individual brilliance the Brazilian has produced during his five-and-a-half-year stay at the club, although Spurs fans may wish that he produced those moments with more regularity.

The winger remarked that it has been a challenging campaign for him personally but admitted that it was a special way to end his time at the club.

Moura told Football.London following his last game for the club: “What a way to finish. Good performance, when I scored I was looking for this goal for a while.

“It has been a tough season and today was a very special day. I’m very, very happy to end in this way. One more special moment that I will keep in my heart.”

The 30-year-old stated that the season as a whole has been a hard one for the entire squad but put that down to the problems ‘outside the pitch’ and confidently backed his teammates to put things right next season.

He added: “Personally it was very hard [for me this season] because I didn’t play a lot, I had a few problems with injuries and the team struggled.

“We can do much, much better we know, but, yeah, what’s done is done. Now it’s time to recover. I’m sure they will do better in the next season.

“We know it’s also hard because the Premier League is very difficult. There are a lot of teams who can arrive. It’s very competitive but we can do better, we have a squad to do better, we have quality players to do better, but now it is not time to complain anymore.

“We need more consistency because I think we’ve had a very good squad in every season that I’ve played here, a quality squad.

“We had a few problems outside of the pitch but there are no words to explain. I think, like I said, the squad that we have, we could do much, much better. Now it’s time to look for the next season.”

This campaign has undoubtedly been one to forget but I certainly do not think our squad is as bad as some people think.

We have some top players in the form of Harry Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Richarlison, Bissouma, Bentancur, Romero, and Porro, and there is no reason why we cannot be competing near the top end of the table next season if we make a couple of smart additions and bring the right manager in.
