Free agent Jermain Defoe opens up on Tottenham’s need for back-up striker

Jermain Defoe has claimed that signing another striker to take the goalscoring burden off Harry Kane’s shoulders should be Tottenham’s number one priority before the January window closes.

The Telegraph reported earlier this month that following Antonio Conte’s meeting with the Spurs hierarchy, the North London club had prioritised signing a striker, a midfielder and a right wing-back this month.

However, with less than a week and a half left until the transfer window slams shut, the North London club are yet to make any new signings.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold claimed on Thursday that Spurs remain confident of bringing in at least two new signings before the end of the month, with Wolves’ Adama Traore being one of the players on the club’s radar.

Defoe believes the Lilywhites also need to bring in a goalscorer before the end of the month to give themselves the best chance of getting back into the Champions League.

When asked what Conte’s men need, the former Spurs striker told talkSPORT Breakfast (Jan 19 from 06:00 – 06:30): “Talk of another forward, there has been so much pressure on Harry Kane for years.

“He is world-class – if they can get in another forward that can score goals as well, then, for Tottenham, it will be good.

“Antonio Conte wants to win now and the top four is so important for that club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Spurs need another forward but with Bergwijn now looking set to stay, I believe that signing an attacking midfielder and a right wing-back would be Conte’s priority. However, a striker should be next on the club’s wishlist, arguably being even more important than a new central defender.
