French press give cruel review of Hugo Lloris World Cup final performance

French outlet SoFoot have targeted Tottenham Hotspur and France captain Hugo Lloris for criticism after the goalkeeper saw his side lose in the World Cup final on penalties.

Lloris led his nation to a second successive World Cup final, after being crowned champions back in 2018. He could not repeat that feat this time around, though, and it was Lionel Messi who instead lifted the coveted prize in Qatar.

Argentina were in total control at half time, leading two goals to nil after a Messi penalty and a well-worked team goal from Angel Di Maria. A quickfire double from Kylian Mbappe in the 80th and 81st minute turned the game on its head, though, and so the tie went to extra time.

There, Argentina once again looked to have it wrapped up when Messi slotted home from close range after 108 minutes, but Mbappe got the chance to level the game from the spot once more after a handball in the box, and the French wonderkid duly obliged.

The South American side eventually got their win in the penalty shootout, scoring all four of their efforts. It was a disappointing shootout for Lloris, who arguably should have done better with a couple of the strikes.

SoFoot certainly think so, anyway. In their review of the game, they said this about Lloris’ performance: “At least he didn’t crash in the final this time around. Well, he did not stop penalties either, but that we knew.”

The outlet even took the opportunity to criticise Lloris when discussing the role played by Axel Disasi, who entered the field of play in injury time in the second half of extra time. SoFoot said: “Replaced by Disasi (120th +1), who touched as many balls as Lloris on penalties.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The French press were singing the praises of Hugo Lloris after the win against England, and have turned on him very quickly now. I’m sure Lloris will feel he could have done better in the shootout, but the task of a goalkeeper in a situation like that is always difficult. He’s had a great tournament nonetheless and should be proud of his accomplishments.
