“From what I am told” – Fabrizio Romano claims Spurs have not bid for ex-Man Utd player

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on reports suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur had tabled an offer to Barcelona for Memphis Depay.

Barcelona-based journalist Gerard Romero claimed on his Twitch channel, Jijantes FC (14/02/2022 – 1:52:20) that the Catalan giants have received an offer from Tottenham for the Dutch international.

Depay only joined moved to the Nou Camp in the summer, joining on a free transfer from French side Lyon and impressed during the opening weeks of the campaign before suffering a hamstring injury in December (transfermarkt).

The former Manchester United player he has managed 10 goals and two assists in 19 La Liga appearances this season, with four of those efforts coming from the penalty spot.

Romano said on the latest edition of the Here We Go podcast (15/03/22 – 23:36): “From what I am told Tottenham are not negotiating for Memphis Depay and I’m told from Tottenham’s side they made no bid for Memphis Depay.

“Let’s see what will happen with Barcelona and if they will be open to let him go but as of now, Tottenham are not working to sign him.”

Despite signing Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traore in January it would seem unlikely that Xavi would want to get rid of Depay after just one season.

Tottenham would certainly have benefitted from his arrival given the over-reliance on Harry Kane and Heung-min Son to continue to score the goals, with limited contribution from the rest of the side.
