Criticised for a lack of visibility at times this season, he really ‘showed’ in this game, increasingly as the game went on, coming deep, wanting the game to be played through himself (for a change). The truly outstanding passes were almost all his. Sometimes you felt his own colleagues lacked the belief that it was possible for him to produce such audacity and they weren’t ready to be on the end of his pictured geometry.

Match Summary

What a night! What a night of European football! Three – nil to take to the second leg. Sensational. But also, what a transformation from one half to the other.

In the first half we witnessed a Spurs side with such limited belief. No ferocity in their pressing. And in possession: conservative pass, conservation pass, pass, long, hopeful ball. No belief in their ability to build with threat.

Second half, better positioning at full back admittedly, but just really belief. From the whistle, we took command, pressing high up the pitch. Dortmund were nowhere. Big players took control, none more so than man of the match, Jan Vertonghen.
