Don’t you just love that bustling run he makes, with or without the ball, born of his excitement, generating ours. His goal was therefore uncharacteristic … he had made the run without the ball and just had to make a beautifully judged but somehow modest single touch volley into the net. He gives this team goals but he gives them so much more and he was a major factor in creating their belief in this game as he has for more than the last month of this season.

Match Summary

What a night! What a night of European football! Three – nil to take to the second leg. Sensational. But also, what a transformation from one half to the other.

In the first half we witnessed a Spurs side with such limited belief. No ferocity in their pressing. And in possession: conservative pass, conservation pass, pass, long, hopeful ball. No belief in their ability to build with threat.

Second half, better positioning at full back admittedly, but just really belief. From the whistle, we took command, pressing high up the pitch. Dortmund were nowhere. Big players took control, none more so than man of the match, Jan Vertonghen.
