His passing out from the back in the first half (because playing on the left angled across to Trippier) was a positive. His uncharacteristic error created their first opportunity to strike the woodwork. He produced a pleasing glancing header that looked goal-bound for some its arc. When Spurs yielded more and more territory, one felt he should have taken charge and got them organised.
Match Summary
It was a tepid affair. Let’s face it after Sunday’s trauma it was just what the team needed in terms of rehab. Southampton were so tentative that Spurs grew increasingly sloppy, finally – with a three goal cushion – relinquishing the contest entirely, allowing Southampton to pass prettily in front of them. The goal was somewhat inevitable and who would begrudge Southampton the consolation?
The result, coupled with Chelsea and Arsenal’s inability to get three points in their respective matches last night means that Tottenham move up to third in the Premier League table.
