‘Gameplan didn’t work’ – Nuno holds himself accountable for Arsenal defeat

Nuno Espirito Santo has held himself accountable for the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal this evening, claiming that his gameplan did not work against the Gunners.

Tottenham never really got going in the North London Derby as they were instantly second best from the first whistle, both in quality and effort.

Arsenal took the lead within 12 minutes, taking advantage of some sloppy defending as Bukayo Saka cut the ball back to Emile Smith-Rowe to tap home inside the box.

By the 27th minute, we saw a similar goal coming from the left-hand side, this time with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sweeping home the cut-back.

Finally, Arsenal made it three and effectively won the game more than ten minutes before the half-time whistle had even been blown as Saka pounced on a Harry Kane error to slot home past Hugo Lloris.

Despite the Gunners being bottom of the table and nine points below Spurs a few weeks ago, this resounding victory took them above their North London rivals.

Nuno said (Football London): “A lot of things went wrong, starting with the decisions I made. The gameplan didn’t work out. I’m very honest and I have to say that.”

On whether the players were responding to his tactics, he added: “Not today. I decided bad. I didn’t take the right decisions and I refuse to go out more further than that.”

On whether he needs to go back to the drawing board, he said: “Maybe. First of all, we have to recover mentally and physically for the next one.

“We started very well with a clear idea we lost it. It is taking us too much time to go back to the things we want to do and the things we want to do as a team. We want to be a team that is fast, stronger, solid, dominant. We are not being that team.”

Journalist Paul Brown also revealed that Nuno added: “I’m going to be honest. I won’t name individuals who didn’t play the game plan right but the game plan was not right according to the players who were on the pitch.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Whether you are Nuno Out or think he deserves more time, what remains a fact is that he has questions to answer and changes to make. Not only that, but the players cannot hide beyond the manager. There were some awful individual performances out there today.
