Gareth Bale tips Spurs 23-year-old to become one of the best in PL

Gareth Bale has tipped Joe Rodon to become one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the years to come.

Rodon, who completed a move to Tottenham from Swansea on the EFL transfer deadline day last summer, has not had as many opportunities as he would have hoped for in his first season at Spurs.

The centre-back was not signed in time to be included in the Europa League squad for the group stages and Jose Mourinho decided not to make any changes to the list for the knockout stages.

The 23-year-old did get some starts in the Premier League in the final few months of Mourinho’s reign and he showed plenty of promise.

However, the centre-back did not start a single game after Ryan Mason replaced Mourinho as the interim coach, with the interim Tottenham boss choosing to keep faith in the pairing of Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld.

Rodon goes into his first major tournament with Wales this summer and Bale admitted that the youngster is excited to be involved.

The 31-year-old also revealed that the defender has come on leaps and bounds over the course of his first season at Spurs.

When asked about Rodon, Bale told Wales Online: “It is great we have spent the past year having some good laughs.

“Ben and I have the experience of 2016 and Joe asks us all the time and he tells us what he was doing when he was watching and that he wanted to be part of a tournament and now he has a chance.

“He has come on leaps and bounds this season, made such a progression in his football, he has got better and better and looks like a real strong defender, sharp, and he is looking better and better.

“He will be one of the top defenders in the Premier League in years to come.

“This is another step in the right direction for him and something he wants to test himself with. I am sure he will do fantastically for us.”
