Gareth Bale’s agent comments on latest retirement rumours from Spain

Gareth Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett has once again dismissed claims that the Welshman could decide to retire after this summer’s European Championships.

Spanish news outlet Marca claimed on Saturday that the 31-year-old is currently planning to hang up his boots with Real Madrid prepared not to stand in his way, which would see the La Liga giants save €22million (18.9million) in the salary owed during his last twelve months of contract.

Marca’s report stated that Bale only appears to be enjoying his football when he is on international duty, claiming that football has not been a priority for the left-footer.

Bale spent last season on loan at Tottenham, where he scored scored 16 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions (transfermarkt).

Football.London have previously reported that Spurs have the first option to bring Bale back to the club next season on the same financial terms, which saw them cover 40 per cent of his salary.

Barnett was quick to pour cold water on the speculation and appeared to aim a dig at the quality of the Spanish press.

He told the MadridistaReal: “As usual in the Spanish press, it is not very reliable news, so I’m not surprised.”
