Gareth Southgate names uncapped Spurs player among players he has been watching

Gareth Southgate has admitted that Ryan Sessegnon is among the young players he has been keeping an eye on recently.

Sessegnon was one of the most highly-rated youngsters in English football when he broke into Fulham’s first-team as a teenager a couple of years ago.

He has represented England in all age groups from the Under-16s onwards and is now a regular in the Under-21s.

Sessegnon did not quite hit the expected heights in his first season at Spurs after his £25m move from Fulham in the summer of 2019.

Tottenham decided to loan the youngster out to Hoffenheim after their capture of Sergio Reguilon last summer and the decision has proven beneficial for the youngster’s development.

The 20-year-old has featured regularly for Sebastian Hoeness’ side at left wing-back and has demonstrated the pace and the technical quality that saw him earn rave reviews as a youngster at Craven Cottage.

Southgate admitted that he is playing close attention to the Bundesliga due to the number of English youngsters plying their trade in Germany, naming Sessegnon as one of the players he has an eye on.

The England boss told talkSPORT: “I think some of our kids have decided that ok that’s is a good route to go down, and when I watch the German league, which we watch quite a lot now because of Jadon (Sancho), Jude (Bellingham) and Ryan Sessegnon is out there and we’ve had some others.

“It’s a great league for young players because you’ve got games against Bayern Munich and Leipzig who are really high, but you’ve also got teams who wouldn’t be as high up in the Premier League where those boys can play a bit and get opportunities in front of goal.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe that Sessegnon could benefit from having another season out on loan as the youngster is going to struggle to get much game time at Spurs next season. I believe it would be in all parties’ best interests for him to spend another year at Hoffenheim.
