Gareth Southgate overlooks in-form Spurs star once again with England squad

England national team boss Gareth Southgate has once again overlooked Eric Dier for international duty.

Southgate had named his penultimate squad before the winter World Cup as England prepare to play four Nations League matches in an 11-day period next month.

Dier has been in impressive form an the heart of the Tottenham Hotspur defence this season but has once again been snubbed by the Three Lions boss

The Spurs man was a member of England’s 2018 World Cup side that reached the semi-finals and scored the winning spot-kick in their last-16 penalty shootout triumph against Colombia in the tournament.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte had backed Dier to go to the World Cup, describing him as one of the best defenders in the Premier League (Evening Standard).

Elsewhere, Harry Kane as expected takes his place in the squad as captain.

SpursWeb Opinion

Dier has been one of Tottenham’s best players this season and has performed much better than the likes of Tyrone Mings, Ben White, Harry Maguire and Conor Coady. Southgate has certainly stuck with his old guard here ahead of the World Cup and has not picked players based on form.
