Gareth Southgate speaks out on Dele Alli’s return to form and his best position

Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli burst to life in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino when he first transferred from MK Dons.

The teenager made the leap from League One to the top division, but took it in his stride and almost instantly won a place in the starting XI under the Argentine.

Since then, Pochettino guided Alli to a spot in the England team, which included a World Cup semi-final, as well as a Champions League Final with Spurs.

However, over the last couple of seasons, Alli has struggled with injuries and consistency, often played out of position at left-mid or a holding role.

Now that Jose Mourinho has come in, Alli looks to have been given a new injection of life, back in his favoured number 10 role.

Alli scored two against Bournemouth at the weekend, creating the third for Sissoko too. Gareth Southgate has now spoken out on Dele’s form after dropping him from the last two England squads.

He said (Sky Sports): “Jose has played him as a No 10 and that’s his best position, having the freedom to run on into the box. That has been very clear for a long time,” Southgate said.

“So it’s great he’s back on the scoring trail.”
