Garth Crooks claims Spurs ‘will win nothing’ while player continues to be selected

BBC football pundit Garth Crooks has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur stand no chance of winning silverware while they continue to play Hugo Lloris in goal.

The Spurs club captain was once again between the posts for yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United in which he played a key role in his own side’s demise at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Lloris came rushing out of his penalty area to try and intercept an overhit pass through the middle by the Magpies and failed to clear the ball before clattering into Callum Wilson which gave the Newcastle player the opportunity to put his side ahead.

The 35-year-old’s clearance to Ryan Sessegnon was also the catalyst for Newcastle’s second when Miguel Almiron slotted the ball underneath him, when it looked like a saveable shot.

Crooks has been critical of the World Cup winner in the past, labelling him as a ‘liability’ following his error in the north London derby at Arsenal (BBC).

The former Spurs striker wrote as part of his Team of the Week piece for the BBC: “Having played in Europe in midweek a point would have been a good result for Spurs. They also need a top class goalkeeper not a top class shot stopper. Spurs will win nothing with Hugo Lloris in goal.”

I’m not sure what Crooks was getting at in reference to Spurs playing in Europe in midweek, when they actually faced Manchester United, however, some fans will start to lose patience with Lloris if these silly errors continue. For an experienced keeper, too many high-profile mistakes are in his game at present.
