‘Massive fan’ – Garth Crooks names one Tottenham star in his Team of the Week

Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that Cristian Romero is the best signing Tottenham Hotspur have made in a long time and was full of praise for the player after his latest display.

Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta on a loan-to-buy deal, initially arriving in the summer of 2021 before making the move permanent last summer in a deal worth a reported £42 million (Sky Sports).

The combative centre-half has quickly established himself as not only one of the most important players in the Tottenham squad, but also as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has racked up 52 appearances for Spurs now (Transfermarkt) and seems to be getting better all the time.

Despite a shaky start to the season, Romero recovered from an injury problem and went on to win the World Cup with Argentina.

He has since returned to club duties with Tottenham and put in some impressive displays of late.

Romero was integral to Tottenham’s recent win over Manchester City where he kept Erling Haaland out of the game.

His latest performance, in the 2-0 win over Chelsea, has led to Crooks heralding Romero as the best player to join Spurs in some time, while naming him in the BBC Team of the Week.

He said: “Regular readers will know what a massive fan I am of Romero. The Tottenham defender joined from Atalanta and, as far as I am concerned, is the best signing the club have made for some time. The player has been a revelation since his arrival.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Our defensive issues this year have always appeared more prominent whenever Cristian Romero is missing, and we look a far better side with him in it.

He’s an incredible player, and I am inclined to agree that he is our best signing for a long time, as he is so important to our backline.
