Garth Crooks names Spurs man who ‘epitomised the grit’ in his team of the week

Garth Crooks has praised Pierre-Emile Hojberg’s performance against Fulham and added that the Dane epitomises the grit that Tottenham have under Antonio Conte.

When Spurs signed Yves Bissouma during the summer, some would have felt that Hojbjerg’s place in the starting eleven was under threat.

However, the 27-year-old is one of the six players, along with Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Son Heung-min and Emerson Royal, to have started every single one of Tottenham’s six Premier League games so far.

Hojbjerg formed an impressive partnership with Rodrigo Bentancur during the second half of last season and the pair have continued from where they left off so far this campaign.

The former Southampton man netted his second goal of the season on Saturday after he played a one-two with Kane before producing a smart finish to give the home side the lead.

Hobjerg is the only Tottenham player to make Crooks’ Team of the Week, with the pundit being quite complimentary of the Danish international’s display.

The former Spurs forward wrote in his column for BBC Sport: “This wasn’t Tottenham’s greatest performance against Fulham and Hojbjerg is not one of Tottenham’s greatest players but both seem to be getting the job done.

“The Danish midfielder’s goal was not just well taken but epitomised the grit Antonio Conte has added to this Tottenham outfit. Spurs sit third in the table, a point behind Arsenal, who are top.

“Talk of either team winning the title is hyperbole but great for North London chitter-chatter and the prospect of a thrilling derby when the teams meet for the first time next month.”

It arguably takes a midfielder like Hojberg, who is good at all phases of play without being exceptional at any one, to play as a midfielder in Conte’s system. The Dane does not really have an obvious weakness and he has been one of our most consistent performers since the start of 2022.
