Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the Carabao Cup after losing a penalty shootout to London rivals Chelsea.

An injury-hit Spurs came into the game with a 1-0 lead from the first leg courtesy of Kane’s penalty

Chelsea were all over Spurs in the first half and went 2-0 up through strikes from Ngolo Kante and Eden Hazard. However, Mauricio Pochettino changed his system to three at the back following the interval and saw immediate results as Tottenham leveled the tie on aggregate through a Fernando Llorente header early in the second half.

Spurs defended valiantly for the rest of the game, with the match ending as a 2-2 draw after both legs, requiring the need for a penalty shootout.

While Eriksen and Lamela converted the first two penalties, Eric Dier hit his spot-kick high over the bar while Lucas Moura’s saw his effort saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

David Luiz stepped up to smash home Chelsea’s fourth penalty, putting the Blues in the Carabao Cup final where they will take on Manchester City.

Tottenham fans were understandably disappointed at the result and by the looks of it, so was former Spurs striker Gary Lineker.

Linekar took to Twitter to tweet his two-word reaction to the result.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. With cheap levy in charge, this is about all Spurs fans will ever be able to expect…. Injuries are normal, so no one should be surprised with our crisis…. And with little depth, Spurs had no answer on offense or PKs…

  2. When it got to penalties,l thought,no kane,no ali,no son,no chance. We have needed a back up striker for the last few windows in case kane is injured and levy will not put is hand in is pocket. We will be out of fa cup,out of champions league and facing the europa league next seaon but at least levy will save a few million. They say its hard to get a striker in this window, but other teams seem to be able to do it.

  3. Third is the best we can finish in the league and I believe we will still finish in the top four . However until the missing return we could be out of all the cups which is what I find hard to take . After the first leg I expected to draw at the bridge beat Palace and knockout Dortmund . Perhaps that’s as far as we would get in the UCL depending on the draw but that would have been an improvement. Another semi final defeat would have been avoid with a 50/50 chance to beat Man City on our regular playing surface . Injuries are part of the game but to lose Kane Dele and to have Sissoko and Dier clearly struggling from the off . Davies goes down early not mention the other niggles players took then you have to wonder about the medical staff . Whatever about lack of signings it’s the medical staff that needs an overhaul !!!

  4. Yes, another trophy opportunity missed, there you go, that is Spurs life for you. But, then we all know getting past Man City would have been mission nearly impossible so it is probably less painful this way.
