Gary Mabbut makes confident prediction regarding Dane Scarlett

Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt has confidently predicted that he expects Dane Scarlett to be a consistent feature of the Spurs first-team in the future.

Scarlett has enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Tottenham’s Under-18s this season, having found the back of the net 15 times in 13 appearances so far.

The youngster has trained with the first-team squad on several occasions this season and has even been handed a few cameos off the bench by Jose Mourinho.

It is clear that the 17-year-old is rated quite highly by the Spurs boss, who revealed that he plans on promoting him to the first-team next season.

However, some pundits have suggested that Scarlett, who penned his first professional contract with Spurs last week, might be better of learning his trade out on loan next season.

Irrespective of whether the teenager is loaned out or promoted straight to the first team, Mabbutt is in no doubt that the striker will be a key player for the North Londoners in the future.

When asked about Scarlett, the former Tottenham defender told Football Fancast: “Every level he’s played at for us, his development is continuing at a very high level.

“He’s got the attitude, he’s got the character, the determination. And as far as his abilities, I think they’re unquestionable.

“So I’m delighted to see him getting his first full contract. And he’s a player that will be pushing to get through to that first team level on a consistent basis.”

As Mabbutt points out, a young player’s attitude and character can often be better predictors of how far they will go than one’s raw ability.

Kane, for example, was certainly never the most talented player in his age group while coming through the ranks at Spurs but he was much more determined to improve than many others.

Like Kane, Scarlett seems like a humble kid who is focused on getting better and that bodes well for his and Tottenham’s future.
