Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt has claimed that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff have done a lot of work behind the scenes on the team’s defensive shape following their collapse against West Ham United last month.
Tottenham’s defensive lapses against the Hammers, which saw them concede three late goals in the final ten minutes of the match, cost the side two valuable points.
The result certainly seems to have impacted Mourinho’s selection decisions, with the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Harry Winks struggling to get game time in the Premier League since the draw against David Moyes’ side.
Tottenham’s defensive record has improved considerably since that performance, with the side looking much more solid at the back and retaining their place at the top of the Premier League table following yesterday’s 0-0 draw at Chelsea.
Mabbutt, who was one of the best centre-backs in the league during his playing days, believes that a lot of work has gone on in the training ground since the 3-3 draw.
Speaking to Football Fancast, he said: “For me, looking at the way we’re playing, I believe defensively, we’ve conceded some soft goals, against West Ham United especially.
“But a lot of work has been done in those areas.”
