After witnessing a depleted Tottenham Hotspur side dominate Manchester United at Old Trafford, Gary Neville has claimed the Lilywhites could finish as high as second in the Premier League this season.
Ange Postecoglou‘s team may have only come away from Manchester with one point, but they continue to earn plaudits for the commitment to attacking football, and the strong identity the whole squad adheres to despite a number of key absences.
Tottenham were without the likes of Heung-min Son, Pape Sarr, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison, but managed to have the lion’s share of possession against United, and had far more attempts on goal, too.
In the end, the two teams shared a point apiece, with goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford twice putting the home side in front. Goals from Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur helped Spurs come from behind on two occasions.
Neville backs Spurs to outdo Liverpool and Arsenal
There are high hopes that Spurs can push on and really challenge at the top once they get all their players back from injury and international duty. Gary Neville certainly thinks they have what it takes, as he told Sky Sports yesterday.
He said: “If they keep their players fit, they are a certainty to finish in the top four and I think they can get to second and third. With those players back, and if they can get through these next few weeks, I genuinely think they can be better than Arsenal and Liverpool this season.
“It might end up being a good draw in the FA Cup against Manchester City. Go out of that and concentrate completely on the league. But they do need to win a trophy.
“If he wins a trophy, great, but we know in the past when teams have had a really explosive season, they’re not usually in Europe or competitions. For Ange Postecoglou to get to second or third, which they could do if they have a clean run at it, would be something special.”
Spurs Web Opinion
As Roy Keane said yesterday in response to this – why not both? Ange Postecoglou will certainly be telling his players they can challenge for the title AND win the FA Cup, and I am starting to dare to believe it’s possible, too.
