Gary Neville questions why this defender would leave Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur managed to defend their way to a point against Man City yesterday evening, with the champions throwing everything they had at Pochettino’s side.

While they started out looking pretty shakey at the back, the Tottenham defenders grew into the game, especially in the second half.

Once they found their shape, they were able to keep Man City out for the second 45, while Lucas Moura managed to grab the equaliser to earn a point.

A large factor in Tottenham’s ability to shut sides like City out is a certain Toby Alderweireld, who marshalled the defence well again yesterday.

However, the Belgian has just a year left on his current contract, meaning that he could leave next summer on a free.

Daniel Levy will now either have to sell up in the next two weeks, sell in January, risk losing him on a free, or convince him to sign a new deal with Spurs.

Gary Neville doesn’t think that Toby could find a better club than Spurs (Sky Sports coverage of Man City v Tottenham – 17/08/19 at 4:30 pm): “I’m getting to the point with Alderweireld, in particular. That if someone makes a decent bid for him, I’m sure Tottenham would let him go, with just a year left on his contract.

“But you start to ask the question, where would he go that would be better for him than Tottenham Hotspur?”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I would offer Alderweireld a three-year contract extension on £200,000 right now. He is one of the best centre-backs in the League and you simply can’t find that kind of like-for-like replacement.
