‘Get one over on Arsenal’ – Pundit urges Spurs to beat Gunners to signing

Kevin Phillips has urged Tottenham Hotspur to beat their North London rivals, Arsenal, to the signing of Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar this summer.

Aouar is rumoured to be on the radars of both Tottenham and Arsenal this transfer window.

It was previously suggested that Spurs have a strong relationship with Lyon, which could work in the Lilywhites’ favour in their pursuit of Aouar.

ESPN then claimed on Friday that Tottenham had offered Lyon the chance to re-sign Tanguy Ndombele in exchange for Aouar but other sources have dismissed the possibility of Tanguy returning to his former club.

Lyon are said to be desperate to cash in on Aouar this summer, with the midfielder thought to be available for as little as £17m, according to some reports from France.

Phillips insisted that Tottenham should not hesitate to complete a deal for Aouar if the midfielder is available for such a modest fee.

The former Sunderland striker told Football Insider: “Any player you try to sign from France, you have that benefit of being a Premier League club.

“If you can get him for that kind of money, just go and do it. It’s as simple as that.

“If you have the chance to get one over on Arsenal then it’s a good bit of business. I can see it.

“Nuno knows what he’s doing and that’s important. He will know how he wants his Tottenham team to play.

“If he can get those signings in then you will see a different style of play at the start of the season.”

If reports suggesting that Harry Winks could leave Spurs are true, then we could do a lot worse than replacing him with Aouar, especially if the Frenchman is available for less than £20m.
