‘Getting closer’ – Fabrizio Romano provides encouraging update on Spurs transfer saga

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have taken a step closer to securing the signature of Cristian Romero.

It is being reported this evening that Atalanta are currently in negotiations with Juventus to sign central defender Merih Demiral.

Atalanta are said to have become frontrunners to land the Turkish international ahead of Borussia Dortmund and are now in advanced talks over a loan deal which includes the option to make the deal permanent.

Demiral is said to be keen to leave the Italian giants, having found regular first team football hard to come by due to being behind the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Matthijs de Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci in the defensive pecking order (Calciomercato).

Romano revealed yesterday that the Argentine defender will tell the Atalanta board and manager, Gian Piero Gasperini today of his desire to make the move to North London.

It appears that Atalanta are looking to secure the services of a defender before allowing Romero to join Spurs.

While this type of situation is perfectly normal in football, Spurs will be hoping that it does not drag on any longer to allow him to link up with his new team-mates in England and familiarise himself with Nuno’s expectations ahead of the Manchester City opener.
