Giovani Lo Celso rejects Christian Eriksen comparisons

Giovani Lo Celso’s rise in form has been of the main bright sparks for Tottenham in the last month or so.

The Argentine now seems to be used to the pace of English football and is starting to have a much bigger say on games.

He is finally showing the kind of quality on the ball that tempted the Lilywhites to take a chance on him after a terrific season for Real Betis in La Liga last time out.

The 23-year-old has played in multiple positions for the Lilywhites since arriving in the summer and he insists he is happy to play anywhere the manager wants him to.

Speaking to the Guardian, he said: “Over my career, I have played in a variety of positions because my managers have asked me. Now I’m at Tottenham and since being here I have already played wide, I’ve played centrally as well.

“The important thing for me is always to do the best I can for the team and to respond to the requests of my coach, and above all, it’s crucial for me to be happy out on the pitch.”

There is hope that the former Real Betis man could now take over the role of being the team’s main creative fulcrum from the departed Christian Eriksen but Lo Celso has rejected comparisons with the Dane.

Speaking about Eriksn, the silky left-footer said, “Christian is a great player and I have seen that through the months I have spent with him here.

“But at the end of the day, the club and Eriksen both came to a decision that it was right for a change. So I try not to compare myself to him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Eriksen and Lo Celso are different kinds of players but I believe that the Argentine can be just as productive going forward for Spurs as the Dane as over the years. While Lo Celso’s passing and vision are not quite at Eriksen’s level, with his ability to skip past players in the middle of the park, he offers something different than the Dane.
