‘Give Conte the money’ – Spurs legend sends message to Levy and co after ’embarassing’ defeat

Graham Roberts has branded Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final as ’embarrassing’ and urged the club to back Antonio Conte in the January transfer window.

Spurs fell to a dismal 2-0 defeat in the first leg at Stamford Bridge through an early Kai Havertz strike and an own goal from Ben Davies following some poor communication between himself and Japhet Tanganga.

Conte’s men somewhat regrouped in the second-half following a poor first 45 minutes, but still struggled to cause many problems for Chelsea who were happy to sit on their two-goal cushion.

Thomas Tuchel’s side was keen to press Spurs into making mistakes in midfield, which often left forward men Harry Kane and Heung-min Son isolated up front.

On the defensive end, Tanganga played a role in both goals with a poor pass out from the back to let in a Chelsea counter-attack, before seeing his headed clearance cannon in past Hugo Lloris off team-mate Davies.

The display angered Spurs legend Roberts, who took to Twitter to voice his disapproval for the way the entire team performed in London.

He also urged the club to give full backing to Conte in the winter transfer window in order to build the squad the way he desires.

The display was so poor all round and Spurs have given themselves an uphill battle heading into the second leg. It really could have been more too, so in that regard, the result flattered Spurs. It has given Conte a clearer picture of what needs improving and the type of personnel to bring in.
