Tottenham’s Harry Kane was announced as Gareth Southgate’s England captain just before the World Cup this summer, with Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson apparent vice-captains.
As soon as this announcement was made, it was clear that Kane would rarely ever get a rest internationally from this moment on, but the England gaffer did announce that he was set to bench the star man for the friendly against Switzerland.
Gareth Southgate has confirmed that @England captain @HKane will be rested tonight – who would you like to see start?

This was music to Spurs fan’s ears, as Harry has yet to have much of a rest since the start of the 2017/18 season.
Since then he has played a full campaign with Spurs, a World Cup with England, and then straight back into Tottenham training for the new season.
As Kane and his fiancée were expecting their second child during pre season, the striker elected to stay at home and train, instead of holidaying or taking a break.
Despite saying that the striker would be rested, Gareth Southgate decided to put Kane on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes or so of the Switzerland game, with England 1-0 up.
Here’s what some fans thought of the decision:
100% mate. Bullshit, wasn't fit for world cup, not fit for the league now playing 100+mins tonight. This is why he's a yard off the pace

Southgate dropped masses in my eyes with that. In a. Ompetitive match i might have forgiven him, but in this meaningless friendly – quite unforgivable. Can you imagine he would have been injured?
